How do you choose the right approach to updating and protecting your heritage building?

Historic Buildings

Are a resource for everyone to enjoy. But the cost of owning one is a responsibility that weighs heavily on many people’s shoulders. Practitioners working with these important buildings are tasked with a duty of care based on physical, historic and aesthetic evidence – as well as the intangible values of memory and sentiment.

Owners

Require specialist advice and guidance when dealing with their heritage building because there are layers of preparation required for every application and many local planning authorities are overstretched. Providing them with clear, well researched, accurate information will ultimately increase your chance of success when you want to make sympathetic changes.

Interior Designers

Can become overwhelmed with the type of advice required during a conservation led schedule of works on a significant building, but this shouldn’t put you off. Advice and guidance is available in many forms – you don’t have to be an architect to understand the sensitivity required to work with heritage buildings.

We bought our house because we fell in love with it on sight. It felt like coming home. It’s a Grade II listed thatched cottage and even after twenty years I can’t believe how lucky we feel to live here.

I’ve always had an interest in historic buildings and I saw my property online and was fascinated with it. It means I can play a small part in caring for a lovely old building that has already existed for 450 years. It’s Grade II* and is a constant expense but I feel so privileged to live here.

We have fabulous sea views in a wonderful Kentish town full of listed buildings – it’s hard not to live in one here! It gets very drafty when the wind blows off the sea and our heating bills are pretty high, but we love it.

Buildings with a story, they really get under your skin, we’re only the custodians. They are a way of life.
